Lantzville

“Small village charm, a mild climate and gentle shores”

Location
The municipality of Lantzville is a peaceful seaside community located on the sheltered east coast of Vancouver Island, directly on Nanaimo’s northern border and just south of Nanoose.

About Lantzville
With a permanent population under 4,000—and a community that likes it that way—modern day Lantzville is a quiet area with a small downtown core and large lot sizes with mature evergreen trees.  The area is almost completely residential with the exception of a few commercial buildings along its main street.

Originally a coal mining area called “Grant’s Mine”, Lantzville was named after Harry Lantz, an American who invested in a coalmine in nearby Nanoose. When the town’s economy changed with the closing of the mines, the miners’ seaside cottages were rented out to city dwellers looking for a quiet spot on the beach. Modern day Lantzville is now a popular summer cottage area where Bed and Breakfasts abound.

Recreation
Lantzville’s main attraction is its 4.5 km long shoreline—a beachcombers delight.  Much of Lantzville’s curving waterfront is made up of narrow pebbled beaches littered with seashells, driftwood sculptures and other treasures washed ashore by the tide.

The remainder of the shore is lined with large sculptural sandstone formations that trap tiny sea creatures in temporary tide pools. Tired but happy beachcombers can relax on the sun-warmed rock and enjoy the sparkling seas of the Strait of Georgia and spectacular vistas of the mainland Coastal Mountains—an undeniably popular pastime!

After a hard day hunting for ocean treasures, visitors and residents alike frequent the Lantzville Hotel to enjoy dinner, a drink and a round of pool. Established in 1924 and retaining much of its original charm, the hotel is still a central feature of the downtown, overlooking both the main street and the Strait of Georgia. The Winchelsea View Golf Course, a demanding 18-hole golf course with impressive ocean views, is also a popular destination.
